Well, you call him your cousin to the face of the public. For sanity's sake.
Sitting in your kitchen at your dining room table (in YOUR spot, you irritably note,) is the ever-popular Rick Stryker. Your father's eldest brother took his wife's name, Stryker, as your mother took McAlister, giving you a headache any time somebody found out about your familial connection. Or, what's supposed to be your familial connection. There are some people who wish they weren't related to their cousins. You know for a fact that you aren't.
"Rick" is really a changeling that replaced your cousin when he was stolen by the Fae as a baby. He kicks puppies. He steals your stuff. He makes fun of you in front of his friends (and behind your back), and he once called Kait a slut in front of half the student body. That's only a couple of reasons why you dislike him, but there are plenty more. You could make a Christmas Wish-list out of the reasons you dislike him, but all in all, it surmounts to a boiling rage that makes your toes curl.
"Finally! How do you manage to sleep half the day away, Collie?" Rick's voice was sweet but bitter as he winked. You flinched slightly when he used that absolutely atrocious nickname he had come up with years ago, but you don't say anything.
"...Oo, still sleepy, little baby?" He cooed, eliciting a small giggle from your mother as your father simply smiles. "Yeah, sure, whatever." You finally snap, taking the last step with a thud as you walk briskly to the fridge. There was no way in hell you were sitting at that table with him. Rick noted this with a slight frown, to your satisfaction as you glanced over your shoulder, but he recovered quickly. He was a pro at that, it seemed.
"Anyway, thank you for the lovely morning chat and delicious breakfast, Aunt Thalia, Uncle Leo. Would you mind if Colin and I speak alone for a little bit?" The changeling turned his speech briefly to your parents, and you freeze for a second. What could he want with you? Surely it wasn't... "I need to get him to his feet on all the Soccer stuff for this semester." ...well, shit.
You down a glass of orange juice before Rick beckons that you head to your room. You cringe at the thought of being alone with this douchebag, but you put the cup down on the counter (spitefully "forgetting" to put it in the dishwasher) and follow him at a slower pace.
Taking the stairs one at a time, you reach the second floor and head back to whence you came, unsure of what to expect. Rick left the door open for you, so you proceed to see him sitting on your bed, the coy smile from before once again curling his lips. After staring (or glaring, in your case) at one another, he opens his mouth to speak.
What does he say?

Colin: Without waiting you spring into action.
ReplyDeleteAlthoguh you know that what you're about to do could have serious repurcussions- locally speaking, that is- you can't stand that horrible mistake of a face much longer. Eyeing the half-open window that just so happened to be level with your bed and directly behind Rick, you instantaneously calculate the physics of the situation. Without hesitation you whip out the salt shaker that you surrepticiously took from the kitchen counter before you went up and spray "Rick" with salt. You then shove is already shriveling body out the window and watch as he falls slimily into your backyard like a huge, abhorrent slug. Giggling slightly at your hysterically screaming parents as they try to make sense of what happened to their precious Rick, you consider the possibility of this day not actually sucking completely. Then again, your parents would soon be upstairs looking for answers. And even if you escaped from them, you know that other, less forgiving authorities will not be pleased with the fact that you just buldozed through a war's worth of laws and red tape. Running through options in your mind, you look above you and consider using the attic, even though it is only for highly extenuating and/or irregular circumstances. But you had already shown you were ready for a change by what you jut did. Why not take it a step further?
I really like Quinnkerdoodle's reply~~~~

he pretty much stole me ideas~
He doesn't. He melts instead.
ReplyDeleteThat could work.
DeleteColin: Give into urge to strangle Rick.
ReplyDeleteYour "cousin" opens the conversation with a few more of his insults. Up here in your room, you're pretty sure your parents can't here you, so you reply with what you've been thinking since you saw him. Changeling, you call him, letting him know you're not going to play along with this cousin stuff. He accepts this with one of his infuriating grins.
"Well, if we're going to get familiar, why don't I call you by your 'real' name?" he asks cozily. "Learza."
You force yourself not to shudder. That name is only used in the underworld, with the demons and fae and the like. Hearing it up here, in your bedroom, with your parents downstairs and the sun shining merrily outside... it just seems wrong.
"Why don't you just tell me what you want," you growl.
At first, he pretends that he's just here to talk to you about soccer. As if! After several minutes of this nonsense, he finally gets to what he's here for.
"Okay, fine," he finally says after your fifth refusal to talk about sports. "I didn't want to talk to you - god knows you humans are annoying - but she made me." Before you can ask any questions, he says, "I really hate to say this, but - we need you."
Of course, he's still smirking like the a-hole he is during this whole speech, which makes it a bit hard to take seriously.
