There's a dead crackle on the other side of the line.
Your heart skips a beat.
Despite your momentary panic, however, you hear a sputter after a few seconds, ending with crunch that sounds vaguely like a granola bar.
"Hello?" You reply, a dull sort of curiosity coming across through your tone.
"Heeeeello, Sleeping Broseph!", comes the chipper (if a bit muffled) reply of a voice you know all too well. An incredulous smile upturns your lips, but you reply without missing a beat.
"'Noon, Prince Hopeless. How's the kingdom of doofus doing?"
"Pretty fine, if I do say so myself."
"Nice." At least you didn't have an unbelievably shitty morning. "What's up?"
"Nah, man, the question is what's up with you?" There's a hitch as Martin swallows the bite of oats he had bitten off earlier. "I saw you gave me a ring while I was in the shower, so I decided I would grace you with my dudely presence and call you back." You can hear the grin in his voice as he pushes your manly pride. You have to remember to switch into your 'normal' mode so that you don't release all the frustration Rick's surprise visit caused onto your best bro.
Because... Marvin is your best bro. You can't get mad at a best bro.
"Of course," a sarcastic eye roll accompanies your drawl of a reply. After letting go of the stress, you can feel yourself slipping into the slang you and Marvin have appropriately named 'dudespeak'. "because wanting to talk with you requires you to 'grace me with your presence' now."
"Oh and you know it!" Marvin snickers on the other side of the line. You smile in reply, but a nagging feeling in your stomach keeps you from being completely care free. You did just receive news of the wonderful Changeling v. Harpies war just minutes before. A drop in the swing of the conversation creates a pause between you two, but from the background noise you can hear through the phone speaker, it seems like Marvin is multitasking.
A few minutes pass as distractions take over both of you.
"Dude."
"Sup."
"I haven't been completely straight with you lately, man."
You pause at his words. His tone had changed. Marvin was usually always the happy, go-to guy that picked you up when the Agency beat you down. You couldn't even fathom what he was going to say next.
"...A'ite. You gonna get something straight now?" Your mouth feels a bit dry as you speak. Why are you getting such a bad feeling about this? He's just asking to talk and chill. Nothing wrong with that.
"Yeah. But it's better if we talk in person. You mind if we can meet up at 5?"
"Sure.
Where?"
